Add to that the winner he scored for Wales against Slovakia last time they played in Cardiff back in March, and the rapid winger is in a rich vein of form for club and country. With that in mind, he is expected to start in tonight's game against Azerbaijan at the CCS.
But James isn't the only United player in Ryan Giggs' squad for this round of matches; after Juventus' Aaron Ramsey pulled out with injury, there was a call-up for 18-year-old Dylan Levitt. The youngster was a regular for United's junior sides in 2018/19, but has only made a handful of appearances for the under-23s and was a surprise inclusion in the Wales senior squad for this summer's training camp in the Algarve. He hasn't even played for the Wales under-21s yet, but has an outside shot at making his international bow if Wales can take a comfortable lead tonight.
Meanwhile, on the women's side of things, Manchester United's new signing from Birmingham City over the summer, midfielder Hayley Ladd, played the full 90 minutes as Wales played out a 2-2 draw with Northern Ireland on Tuesday. After going behind early on, Wales came back with a goal in each half and were on the verge of victory when the Northern Ireland skipper Ashley Hutton equalised four minutes into injury time.
Ladd returns from international duty just in time to appear for Manchester United in their season opener against Manchester City tomorrow.
At youth level, defenders Oliver Denham and Iestyn Hughes are on standby for the Wales under-19s squad for games against Denmark tonight and either Sweden or Norway on Monday, while Charlie Savage - the son of Class of 92 midfielder Robbie - was in the Wales under-17s squad for two friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the week.
Keep an eye out for updates from those matches right here over the next few days.
