United winger Daniel James played the full 90 minutes of Wales' EURO 2020 qualifier at home to Azerbaijan on Friday night. The 21-year-old was kept largely in check by the Azerbaijanis' game plan, but his work rate and pace helped him win the ball back a few times early on, as well as drawing a free kick in a positive area.

Wales were stymied by the Azerbaijani defensive efforts and struggled to break them down. After a first-half own goal put the home side in front, an error from goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey allowed Azerbaijan to equalise after almost an hour; however, Wales were rescued by a late goal from talisman Gareth Bale, who was linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer (as he is almost every year).

Despite a quiet performance, James will be buoyed by the recognition of his form at club level. In addition to the Player of the Month prize he picked up yesterday, the goal he scored against Southampton on 31 August was named Manchester United's goal of the month.
Wales' next game is against Belarus at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, former Red Regan Poole was captain for Wales in their opening qualifier for the 2021 Under-21 Euros against Belgium at the Racecourse last night. Wales took the lead with three minutes on the clock, and Poole almost doubled his side's advantage moments later, but headed just wide.

The result leaves Wales in second place in Group 9 at this early stage, sitting behind only Bosnia & Herzegovina, who beat Moldova 4-0 back in March. Wales will take on Germany, again at the Racecourse, on Tuesday night.
